Isabelle Higgins
Gloucester Showgirl 2016

I’ve grown up on ‘Curracabark’, a family beef cattle property 50km from town. My family has longstanding ties to Gloucester and it’s special to be able to be part of the region in this way, living on and working the land as we have done for generations. I have always had a deep connection to the land, particularly as I have spent time living in Sydney for boarding school and university.

Living away from home for long periods of time has given me a greater appreciation for it! I’m a hands-on person who loves getting involved with all the cattle and farm work - more than happy to jump on a horse or a tractor and help out. Hard work, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude goes a long way in my books! As well as getting my hands dirty, I love travelling, adventuring outdoors, playing tennis, a good book, home-grown food, and spending quality time with family and friends.

I value education very highly and am currently in my fourth and final year of studying Primary Education at UTS. I’m eager to graduate, get teaching, and keep learning! Education has the ability to effect positive change in the world and advance both individuals and communities. The combination of my passions - the importance of education and rural NSW - has led me to conduct a research project about rural education in order to complete an Honours qualification on top of my degree.

I’m looking into the job of teaching in rural schools, and the factors that encourage teachers to live and work in rural communities (and discourage them from!).

One of my ambitions is eventually to work with tertiary institutions to better prepare new teachers, especially those that hail from the city, for work in rural schools and support them in doing so.

I feel lucky to call Gloucester, such a beautiful spot, home and am very proud of where my roots are. I am honoured to be Gloucester Showgirl this year and eager to be involved in all the job entails! The competition provides a fantastic opportunity to be representative of the local area, to engage with the community and give back to it by promoting our district, agriculture, and rural NSW. It is also exciting to meet likeminded girls through the process who are passionate about their rural communities and doing great things to contribute to their world.
